Time tracking and the timer

Log time by typing it or with a timer that follows you across the app — and never counts time when nobody is there.

Time is logged on a task or on the whole project. You can type it in after the fact, or start a timer and stop it when you're done. Logged time is kept exactly as recorded; rounding only ever happens when time goes on an invoice.

Log time by typing it

In a task's Time section (+ Add time), on the task page (Log time) or on the project's Time tab, enter the time, the date and an optional note. Bizinly understands the usual ways of writing it, and shows what it understood before you save:

You type It means
3.30, 3,30 or 3:30 3 h 30 min
1.5, 1,5 or 1,5h 1 h 30 min
45 45 min
1h 30m 1 h 30 min

Two digits after the point are minutes, one digit is a fraction of an hour; anything ambiguous is refused rather than guessed. One entry can be up to 24 hours. You can delete your own entries; a project's managers can delete anyone's.

The Time tab lists the latest entries with totals — total, billable, unbilled and invoiced — and each entry shows whether it's Unbilled, Invoiced (with its invoice) or Not billable.

The timer

  1. Press Start timer on a task — in its side panel, on its page, or with the round button on its board card.
  2. A chip appears in the top bar with a pulsing dot, the running time and the task. It follows you on every page and survives a reload or another browser.
  3. Click the chip to open the task, Stop the timer (the time becomes an entry, marked with a clock) or Discard it (nothing is logged).

You have one timer at a time: starting a timer on another task asks first, then stops the running one and logs its time. Anything under 30 seconds is treated as an accidental click and not logged. A stopped timer records whole minutes, dated the day it started, billable according to the project's default.

Forgotten timers

A timer left running should never log time when nobody was working. Bizinly watches for that in three ways:

  • Away from the keyboard. If the page is open but nobody has touched it for a while (15 minutes by default), the next time you move the mouse Bizinly asks "Were you away?" — No activity since 14:05 (38m) — and you choose: Keep this time, Discard it (the timer carries on, without the idle stretch), or Stop the timer at 14:05.
  • Tab closed or computer asleep. If no Bizinly page has been open for a while (30 minutes by default), the timer is stopped at your last activity, the worked time is logged, and you get a notification: "Your timer was stopped at 14:05 because you were away. Adjust the time if needed."
  • Running too long. A timer stops by itself after the longest allowed time (10 hours by default) — or at your last activity, if you'd already gone — and tells you so.

Every automatic stop sends exactly one notification saying what was logged, and the entry can be edited or deleted like any other. If the task was deleted or its project closed in the meantime, nothing is logged and the notification says so. An admin sets the three limits under Admin → Plugins → Projects → Settings → Forgotten timers.

Billable time

Each entry is billable or not — a tick when you log it, and per entry in the Time tab and on the task page (for whoever logged it, or the project's managers). New entries start from the project's Time is billable by default setting. Only a project with a customer is ever invoiced; time on an internal project, or on a task without a project, is never billed. Turning billable time into an invoice: Invoice your time.

Time tracking and the timer can each be switched off for the whole company — see Statuses, labels and Projects settings. Logged time is kept.
